Peter Flower presented the 2019 Academy Lecture on 28 November 2019 in the New Lecture Theatre at the University of Cape Town. He is a Fellow of the South African Academy of Engineering and he recently retired from the position of Director of the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department after successfully leading the City through the worst drought recorded in some 100 years in the region. Peter has had 40 years experience in the water sector, mostly with the City of Cape Town where he was also involved with, and responsible for, the planning and development of a significant portion of the region’s bulk water supply infrastructure.
Peter Flower’s knowledge of major water supply systems and of the lessons learned from Cape Town’s drought management experience has been internationally recognised and by invitation he has spoken at Cali in Columbia and more recently in Kuwait City at the International Monetary Fund’s Symposium on Managing Water Scarcity for senior government officials responsible for the management of water utilities in the MENA (Middle East and North African) region. He has also provided high-level advice to assist Maputo to address the impact of their recent serious drought.
